Muscle Strain Treatments

Muscle Strain

Muscle strain, also called a muscle pull, muscle tension, or a muscle injury refers to damage to one or more of the attaching tendons to a muscle. With sudden heavy lifting, sports, or while doing strenuous work activities you can easily put undue stress on the muscles and the tendons attached to that muscle. Muscle strain can be in the form of torn (either all or part) of the muscle and the tendons attached. Muscle strain develops when the stretched or contracted muscles pull on the tendons causing pain. A sprain is a type of strain in which the muscle is slightly inflamed and the tendons are stretched to a degree beyond their normal limits. Sports related muscle strain is common among wrestlers, boxers, sprinters, runners and basketball players.

Muscle Strain Symptoms – The major symptom of muscle strain is usually a sudden and severe pain that shoots through the entire body. Pain intensity increases as the muscle strain progresses. Muscle spasms may occur as the muscle strain progresses. Other symptoms include soreness, bruising, redness, swelling, and tendinitis. Some people also experience fatigue, dizziness, nausea, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, and weakness. Some muscle strains do not have symptoms at all.

The best way to prevent muscle strains is by avoiding overuse of muscles, stretching properly and cooling down after exercising. Exercises that stabilize the spine, increase strength, and stretch the muscles are especially beneficial. If muscle strains do develop, a doctor can conduct a diagnostic evaluation and recommend the best physical therapy, diagnostic tests, and medication to treat the symptoms of the injury. In most instances, muscle strains heal within six weeks.

How Do I Treat My Injury? – If you have been injured or your symptoms seem similar to those of a muscle strain, rest is normally the recommended treatment until the symptoms subside. Ice is typically recommended for this type of injury along with compression stockings and a good stretching routine.

Muscle Strain Treatments – Athletes are often faced with muscle strains in their everyday sports. Athletes are required to lift excessive weight, move swiftly, and stand on their feet for long periods of time. This can lead to strain on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These injuries can occur during training and strenuous activity and often result in temporary or permanent damage to the affected muscle fiber. Damage to muscle fibers often leads to inflammation which further damages the muscles.

Muscle Strain Treatments – An injury can be a difficult and painful experience, but it doesn’t have to define you. If you believe you have been injured or know that you have been injured, seek the advice of a doctor or medical professional. A doctor can determine the severity of your injury and recommend the best course of action for treatment. If you believe you have a muscle strain, take precautions to avoid further injury and damage by stretching properly and returning to your normal activities as soon as possible.

Severe Strain Treatments – For most minor or moderate injuries that do not require medical treatment, stretching exercises and ice therapy will usually take care of the problem. More severe strains may need medical treatment such as cortisone injections and MRI scans. In these cases, patients may be advised to rest and limit exercise until the doctor decides if they should start to train again. Resting can help ease the pain, but in some cases, extreme exercises may be necessary to resolve the issue.

Muscle Strain Treatments – Rest and ice therapy do not always solve the problem of strained muscles. Some people need to do more than just rest to prevent further injury from occurring or to reduce the pain. In these cases, patients are usually advised to perform strength training exercises and stretching exercises to decrease the pain and to increase flexibility. Exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses can help decrease the stress on the muscles and can also increase the strength of muscles without straining them.
